- Description:
Stems are spreading and branched. Leaves are ½-2 inches wide and 1-4 inches long,
opposite, with irregularly cut margins. Tubular, five-lobed, rose-colored flowers are
arranged in broad clusters.
- Comments:
Rose Verbena grows on rocky hillsides and roadsides in the eastern one-third of the
state. Plants are low-growing and easily overlooked when not in flower. However, in bloom
their bright, showy flowers cannot be missed. Most other closely related Flint Hills
verbenas grow erect with narrow flower spikes. Hoary Vervain is a sturdy plant, growing 3
feet tall, which invades overgrazed pastures. Narrow-leaf Verbena is slender and delicate
with spikes of pale blue-violet flowers.
