- Comments:
This species is most common in southeastern portions of the Great Plains. However,
extensive postbreeding dispersal occurs and birds have been recorded in Canada. Juveniles
are white and most likely confused with Snowy Egrets; however, their legs and feet are
greenish. Adults are reddish-purple to slate blue with a bluish, black-tipped bill. An
intermediate molt stage results in a pied or calico white and blue plumage and generally a
white body with blue primaries. It may be confused with a Tricolored Heron. Little Blue
Herons are much smaller and duller colored than Reddish Egrets which have a bill with a
pink base.
